The Origin and Symbolism of the Welsh Lovespoon

The custom of carving and giving Welsh Lovespoons originated in Wales hundreds of years ago. Originally they were carved by young men and offered to the girls they loved as tokens of affection. Some of the early lovespoons can be seen on display at the Welsh Folk Museum in Cardiff. There is even one that dates back to 1667.

Over the years, as the lovespoons became more elaborate and decorative, they have become collectables. As the lovespoon became more intricate the carvers would show their skill by carving different symbols into the wood

Our products come directly from the workshops of Welsh crafts people and each one is hand carved. The spoon is sanded three time with different grades of sandpaper and polished twice with beeswax. to achieve a quality smooth silky finish that the Welsh Lovespoon deserves.

There's a romantic meaning to each part of the spoon. Wrapped up in the intricate carvings were many symbols through which a message of love and intentions could be passed. These are the symbols and their meanings:

HORSESHOE - Good luck
KEY/ KEYHOLE - Security or I shall look after you.
KNOT / CELTIC KNOTWORK - Eternal love or Together forever or Everlasting.
LOCK - Security or, I shall look after you
TWISTED STEM - Two live become as one, or, Togetherness.
DRAGON - Protection or Symbol of Wales.
